Nurturing the Passion for Community Service
By Team Headache   Dogs, cats and wildlife do not always have an easy life. In Malaysia, many pets are abandoned on the streets and are dying due to lack of food or shelter. Furthermore, some dogs and cats roam on the streets, where they have a high chance of being caught by the authorities, after which they are put to sleep. Others usually end up in shelters, where volunteers do their utmost best to provide them with food, shelter, and a loving hug. Although volunteers have done their best in raising these dogs and cats, they still are short of funds to provide better for the animals. Therefore, we, Team Headache from Brickfields Asia College comprising  21 members have decided to  help raise funds to provide for these animals. We are collaborating with PAWS Malaysia and PapanSouls.

PapanSouls is a non-government organisation that feeds and takes care of abandoned animals. Their mission is to do their best to provide a better life to abandoned animals. PAWS (PAWS Animal Welfare Society) is a non-profit animal shelter in Petaling Jaya that has been operating since 1987. They care for unwanted dogs and cats, which they will vaccinate, deworm, neuter/spay, and put up for adoption.

Currently, over 250 dogs and cats are under these shelters. Donations from the generous public and proceeds from charitable events entirely fund these shelters and all costs involved in running it. PAWS is made up  of four office staff, several part-time veterinarians, one vet assistant, six kennel workers, and one driver. They are registered under the Registry of Societies of Malaysia that an elected committee leads. PAWS have been accepting unwanted pets and strays – puppies, dogs, kittens and cats. PAWS is also home to hundreds of animals waiting for a forever home. PapanSouls is an organisation based in Ipoh and cares for strays around the Papan Landfill. It was founded in 2020 by spokesperson, Keshturi Sivam, who came across a social media post about dogs that have been abandoned along the Ipoh-Lumut Highway, and initiated by a group of volunteers who organises rescues, volunteering services, and donations. Aside from taking in and re-homing as many strays as possible, volunteers feed the dogs at the dumpsite daily. Virtual pet adoptions are also organised. Stray dogs are usually left at the dumpsite to fend for themselves, or are caught and dumped by the Ipoh City Council (MBI) or abandoned by their heartless owners. Hence, these volunteers have been taking care of these animals and helping strays to be adopted. According to their Facebook page, about 60 to 80 strays are located at this dumpsite. They require help in the form of food, shelter, medication, and sterilization. Among the challenges faced by this shelter today include receiving an eviction letter to vacate their premises in 30 days and struggling to meet rental prices as they can only afford RM5,000 and below. To endorse our fundraising efforts, Team Headache has been  working hard by publishing our posters through social media platforms. By consistently promoting our activities, we hope to raise awareness. In addition, we have planned fundraising activities, which include selling flowers and balloons, having a  photoshoot and asking for donations from a nearby shelter. By partnering with PapanSouls & PAWS, we will help to reduce the number of strays by hoping they find forever homes and help to create a world where animals are treated more humanely. With that being said, this project will help raise awareness, educate the public on the pressing issue regarding stray animals, and advocate for the fair treatment of stray animals.
