Animals, whether we are aware or not, play a huge role in our lives and in the environment. Research shows that the population of strays and abandoned animals in Malaysia have risen since the pandemic, because other priorities took precedence.
With household incomes being lowered or slashed, some pet owners were struggling to find the right balance to take care of their pets. One of the contributing factors in the increase of stray cats and dogs is irresponsible pet ownership.
Some people tend to keep animals just to fulfill their satisfaction for a certain period of time. They would then abandon their pets. Another reason for the increase in strays is because owners do not spay or neuter their pets, leaving the floodgates open for unwanted animals. This is sad because society still tend to buy or breed, instead of adopting or fostering shelter and rescue animals.
With this in mind, we, a group of students from Brickfields Asia College, who call ourselves Team Chicken Nuggets have decided on a campaign to:
– Raise public awareness on the current situation of stray animals
– Fundraise for a charity taking care of stray and abandoned animals
– Help our chosen charity/shelter take care of stray and abandoned animals
– Indirectly contribute to lowering population of stray and abandoned animals
As part of our community service project, Team Chicken Nuggets decided to conduct a fundraising campaign for abandoned cats on CatBeach, Penang.
CatBeach is a no-kill, cats only home for 300+ cats rescued from life-or-death situations. This non-govermental organisation has been lacking in funds and resources for the cats’ sustenance, medical expenses and proper sheltering.
We launched a virtual fundraising campaign. Team Chicken Nuggets decided to sell bouquets of roses, in addition to creating awareness about strays – reiterating the fact that strays are also living creatures.
Why we decided on flowers?
After conducting a market value research on dried, faux and fresh flowers, we unanimously agreed that soap flower is the most suitable, bringing in higher returns – it is longer-lasting, more affordable for our target clients which are students, and there is a wide range of flower types and designs for soap flowers. Furthermore, soap flowers are well-sought after as it requires no maintenance and does not cause allergies.
After due diligence, “pandaflorist” was chosen as our supplier. We then surveyed and compared the cost of delivery and courier service providers throughout Malaysia. Lalamove was the most convenient and cost-effective. Lastly, taking into account our estimated expenses, expected sales and profits, we decided to sell 3 stalks of rose soap flowers for RM20.00 and 9 stalks for RM35.00.
